2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo flashing headlights

Hi, I came across this forum and had a few questions and was hoping someone can help.... I have a 2005 JGC Laredo 68000 miles.... My headlights flash on and off sometimes while the lights are flashing the dashboard lights flash as well... If I turn the side lights on the dashboard lights come back on... But if I try the headlights again they go off again... It's getting frustrating and dangerous cause sometimes they wont come back on... i took it to a mechanic and they cant find the problem... Just recently today the check engine light came on... I'm lost on what to do and im a female whose not very auto saavy you know... Any help is greatly appreciated...
