burning cds from my digital library

I just purchased and iPod. I like the idea of having most of music collection on one device so I can hook it up in the car, at home and in the office. What I didn't realize is that I can't make CDs for my wife's car once the music is in the iTunes library. I really don't want to load my music on my computer twice.

Does anyone have a suggestion for this? Should I return the iPod and go for a MP3 player that I can load music onto and keep my library in an "open" program that doesn't have copy protection?
