Sorry... I'm a bit green when it comes to audio stuff. I've discovered that my problem apparently is with my (main) computer's cheap integrated audio electronics... it produces a fairly loud noise (that doesn't vary much in volume) if there is ANY noise whatsoever in the source file. Using Sound Forge, I reduced the volume of the noise by 10db multiple times, listening to it between each reduction. The noise sounded virtually the same each time until at about the forth iteration it went away comletely! I guess the noise I saw with the Edirol is normal, and doesn't normally sound nearly as loud as my lousy computer hardware would like it to sound.
