is a Digital8 camcorder. It records digital DV format video to the digital tape. Digital8 tape is digital media and should not be confused with VHS, VHS-C, Hi8, 8mm and other analog media. The zeroes and ones stored on digital tape are the same as the zeroes and ones stored to other digital media - just a different format. One cool feature (among many) with this particular camcorder is that it can playback the analog 8mm and Hi8 tapes, too - and they can be imported over the firewire connection as well...
Link to the manual:
Connect the camcorder's DV port (page 128, item 2 top part of the page)
to the computer's firewire port

If your computer has no firewire port, hopefully it has an available expansion slot so you can add one. DV, firewire, i.Link, and IEEE1394 are all the same thing. USB-to-firewire cable/converter/adapter things will not work. USB won't work (used for transferring stills from the flash memory card only). Thunderbolt-to-firewire adapters do work.
Power up the camcorder and put it into Play/Edit mode (page 6).
Rewind the tape.
Launch the video editor in the computer. Import or Capture or Log and Transfer (depends on the editor) from the editor - and the importing should start...
