Focus and depth of field
The depth of field and aperture are closely related. If your camera has closed the aperture then the depth of field will be long, if the aperture is wide open then the point of focus will be clear and objects far away will be blurred.
If your camera gives you a manual setting feature (most high end cameras do) then set your aperture to its widest position and let the shutter speed control the exposure. Some cameras have portrait mode and this will have the same effect.
In my Panasonic the manual control comes as IRIS and SHTR (shutter speed)
