DVD players as in "Video DVD" means there is one and only one standard. While almost all video editors and production software will render the Video DVD it will be in what they call Standard Definition.
And yes we could go into exactly what the formatting is but why? It's on the web and really is not of much interest for this discussion as no one I know really cares unless they are crazy enough to try to handcraft a Video DVD by putting files on a disc!
Step back and accept there are many video encodings. Now all you need is to look at the camcorder, what it makes, then how to move it's content to the computer and what editor can deal with it.
For me I have other trick software such as HANDBRAKE to convert such things if my editor won't handle it but that's fairly advanced and something you learn later.
