I have the Sony. It's an excellent camera, especially if you just want to "point-and-shoot," because Sony's Intelligent and Superior Auto modes with very well. BUT, it has been discontinued for quite awhile now, and unless a local retailer has one cheap, you'd be hard pressed to find a new one for under $300. The replacement for the HX9V is the HX20V.
The Canon too is discontinued, but only recently, so is easily obtained for far less than $300. In some ways it is better than the Sony; it has Aperture and Shutter Speed Priority modes, and a bit more zoom.
