Compression, and RAW photos

As Kalel said, your pictures are being compressed before being stored onto the medium. The compression level is usually user-configurable to use more or less compression, or to take RAW (uncompressed) photos. Check your camera manual on how to adjust the compression level. Your Nikon's default compression setting is higher than your Kodak's, hence the smaller photo file size.
