I have two of these -- immaculately well-maintained and virus-protected. I make two back ups (each) weekly. One, that I've had no problems whatsoever with, just yesterday, had the internal HD die. Unrecoverable. It worked like a charm before this happened. Luckily, I have cloned, bootable backups of all data. I love this machine, I just got unlucky!
I'm going to replace the HD -- important note: you must replace internal HD with one from the same manufacturer -- usually Seagate or Western Digital. This is due to the proprietary heat-sensor cables that are used on these iMacs that will not work well with a different manufacturer's HD. I've heard that if you use another brand HD, the fans will make sounds like kamikaze bomber planes!
My advice when buying this iMac -- because even well-designed computers like this one are susceptible to sudden HD death:
Back up often and, if the HD dies, replace with the same brand hard drive! Oh, and buy AppleCare -- it's worth it!
It happens often enough to be vigilant and prepared for the unfortunate hardware stuff that can happen. I've owned about 10 Macs and have had 3 HDs die on me. It's the price we pay for constant computing!
Good luck!
