Compaq Presario desktop PC - memory upgrade failure

I have a pretty standard Compaq Presario Desktop PC (SR1800NX, factory-installed 512MB PC2-3200, 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM). It's about 4 years old. BIOS & chipset drivers are updated.
I removed the factory 512MB card and installed a Crucial 1GB DDR2 PC6400 800MHz card from Best Buy (#CT12864AA800). Immediately after power-on, the machine beeps continuously and screen remains black. I tried a different but identical Crucial 1GB card and got the same failure. Removed Crucial and reinstalled factory 512MB card and PC works fine.
I've installed plenty of DDR2 PC6400 in older machines and never had this problem.
