Thanks R. The USB stick is a good fallback. However there must be something I can do to connect to the identified networks. E.g. I ensure the wireless mode is switched on when I visit a hotspot, I select the network (let's say a coffee shop I'm sitting in), enter the appropriate code and click 'Connect', the laptop sits and thinks for a while but then fails to connect. I tried disabling the firewall etc.. There must be something else that I'm not doing or something I need to enable in the laptop to make it connect. As I mentioned, the same laptop connects to my wireless network at home with no problem. Any other thoughts R or anybody else?
