After deleting the driver again and downloading something that didn't help (called the Driver Manger), Windows decided to detect the Atheros adapter, and download and install the driver, just like when you add a mouse, or external hard drive, or something for which Windows automatically downloads the driver for you. Now it works again.
Thanks though, I may end up with that USB antennae, that's slick, nicer for a laptop than those antenna with the USB cord extension.
