Many machines never do this proper and given XP machines are usually out of warranty I show the customer the HIBERNATE feature which on a good machine will go to hibernate in 30 or so seconds. Then it may wake up in about the same time.

In closing, unplug and printer, USB drives and any USB, FIREWIRE devices during testing.
