But let me share this parting thought. You called the files 'pests' and that's not quite correct. It's like NORMAL.DOT collects 'cruft' and at some point causes Word to fail in oddball ways.

You only need to delete the NORMAL.DOT when you notice Word to not start or it's misbehaving even after a reboot.
