Disk Utility Repair using Ubuntu Live CD

To start, run Ubuntu as a Live CD as before.
Follow instructions as above for the three steps outlined above. Wait until the desktop fully loads before proceeding.
Click 'System>Administration>Disk Utility' upper left corner in task bar top of screen:
You should see a window similar to this one (except this system has two windows hard drives)

Next select the hard drive you wish to test or fix (in your case it would be the drive XP is on) by clicking "Check Filesystem" below left of the Volume bitmap or picture. This XP drive should say it is a NTFS drive with the size of the drive just preceding.
Click "Check Filesystem". In the case of a clean filesystem, (such as this one) scanning the entire drive will take only one or two seconds to complete.

By doing this now, you reduce the chance of problems in restoring your system with the Sony disks.
