Count me in on this problem

I am working on a friend's F700, same exact problem as mentioned above.

I am trying the escape key trick, and the only thing that happens is the lights stay on. No screen activity, no HD activity that I can hear.

I am afraid to buy a new motherboard now, as this seems to be an ongoing issue with tis model, and will only rear its head sometime in the future.

Has anyone had any success with HP taking the blame for this?
