The only problem I see with this it the warranty. Most of the time if you open the case and break the seal, the warranty is then void. So take this into consideration.
You could also use a DriveCopy program to copy the old hard drive to the new hard drive then do an update on the new OS. That way, you would have everything that was on your old drive on the new drive and 99% of it working like it always did, but with the new OS.
