Like magnetic media, the material used to store the data on CDs deteriorates over time. In the case of CD-Rs, it's generally decades.
However, CD-RW uses thinner layers, that can be burned away, one at a time (that's why they're ReWritable).
This makes the disk less stable. The material deteriorates in months.
