there was no precedence to go by as no one had ever built a commercial jet airliner before.
The story of how they eventually found the reason for the Comet losses is quite fascinating.
And who would have thought that sticking a 12 degree ramp on the front of an aircraft carrier would allow the Harrier to carry a greater payload and still have STO capabilities.
