Since 7 didn't install I thought I'd look at folk trying to install another OS. I found this:

It appears it is an issue. I'd use their ideas on how to update the BIOS,

-> I will explain but have NO WAY to verify it. Many of the mass produced machines use a pre-loaded hard drive since installing once in the laptop would be costly. This means a company could roll out with a defect in the BIOS and only notice after someone (like you) notices they can't install 7 or Ubuntu.
