You did not cite the advice on how to tweak the computer to load the archives site fast in the right way. A critical thing is missing. The private/etc/hosts file is invisible and cannot be edited because even the admin user has no privileges to save the edited file. Therefore, this file should be opened in Terminal and edited there, which is not intuitive (like control-O for save). The edit line to add to the file is correct per your post. To complete the editing and flush the DNS cache, one has to follow the procedures detailed in the following link (taken from Kevin's thread on finetenedmac.com; provided by Alternaut):

One may not need the $ sign, just do as in the previous post.
I can confirm that it works in Snow Leopard as well.
