It's hard to say which is the best AV program. Detection rates obviously are key. For that I'd check out AV Comparatives, a well respected organization afaik http://www.av-comparatives.org/ who run tests on a number of AV programs.
Here's their latest

I've tried most of the major AV programs. I'm currently using VIPRE (not tested by AV Comp) And I'm pretty happy with it. I barely know it's there. It's light on resources which is good for my purposes since I like to game a lot in my spare time.
As far as system security I have to say I have been let down by AV programs in general. The few times my system has been under attack it hasn't been my AV program that bailed me out. It's been my anti-spyware scanners eg Hitman Pro, Superantispyware, HijackTHis and MalwareBytes. Wheatever it's been has breezed right by my AV.
I remember I asked ESET about a spyware scanner they recommended and they said I didn't need one because ESET was good against spyware too. They were wrong.
For the money imo you're best off going with a free AV since no one can totally protect you and their quality seems to fluctuate depending on the threats, both emerging and known. And then supplement it with some good spyware scanners such as the ones I mentioned
