Using Countif function

what I suggested, using the countif function does work.

Create the Male/Female column and populate it.
On another part of your spreadsheet select a cell and hit the Function button in the toolbar.
Put an = sign in the address bar Select the Countif function and choose insert function
Click in the test-array bubble and then select your Male/Female column by dragging from top to bottom
Click in the test-array bubble again and the column address is put there.
Click the condition bubble and type "male" (include the quotes)
Click the Accept button.

Repeat the above, in the cell below, and this time use female as the condition.

Select both cells, choose Charts and Pie Chart.

That's it
