Not really. Best thing you can do, is just find like a commercially pressed CD or DVD that is still in very good condition and put it into the drive, see what happens.

Some people have claimed success with lens cleaners and even repairing permissions, but odds are this is a bad drive, since optical drives do go bad pretty often. Good news is, on a Mac Pro you can put in pretty much any IDE optical drive you want, and it'll work just fine, so it doesn't need to be an expensive repair.
