Distorted audio recorded at a concert *typically* will come from audio that is too loud for the audio recording device's automatic audio gain control. The result is a muddy mess with static (due to peaking).

The resolution is to use manual audio gain control. This is the case whether camcorder or digital audio recording device. Keep the audio meters in about the 3/4 range. Occasional peaks are OK - but constant pegging/peaking will result in poor audio.
