If you are considering the D5200, you may as well step up to the D7000. The D7000 is a better camera and heavily discounted because it's "old." The D5200 hasn't even hit the shelves yet; you'd pay top dollar to be a first-adopter.

Depending on how old your dad's film Nikon lenses are, they will fit but there is a good chance they will not autofocus, most especially on any of the one's your considering. The D7000 can autofocus some of them because it has an in-body motor for the AF lenses that require a screw-drive motor.
