The pipes from Afghanistan could indeed be overwhelmed as you consider that each connection takes a "socket" on some router/gateway/server and as those are a limited resource a router/gateway/server could call it a day and reset/reboot/tosseveryoneout and good apps would reconnect if configured to do so.

Since the Google talk server is likely not in your country, this is a pretty safe bet that nothing is wrong with your machine.

If you research how these things work, you discover Skype did another design on this and Google used a more traditional "our server" thing. All very interesting but nothing seems wrong to me given location and that it is a freebie.
