Ken, how do you mean?
An e-mail server is just a program that runs at some provider and (apart from sending) does not much more than waiting for an incoming mail and - when that arrives - put it in an something called an 'inbox'.
Then you can have a look in that inbox in three possible ways:
1. Via a webbrowser (like Internet Explorer)
2. Via an imap email client
3. Via a pop3 email client
The last one, moreover, copies mail from the inbox maintained at providers server to your local hard disk. It's somewhat confusing that there's an inbox there also.
