Your contention that "circuitry in MP3 players generates interference" is bogus, for two reasons. First, it's just not true, and secondly, even if it did, that portion of the "circuitry" wouldn't be energized when listening to the AM tuner.

I'd bet the real reason is that it's simple economics; not enough people want to listen to talk radio, which predominates AM, to make it economically justifiable. Sad, but true.
