"not a win32 application..."?

I had AVG Free 2012 installed on me Mum's computer, and she started having problems I associated with it. I couldn't un-install it completely.
I've tried downloading and running the AVG Uninstall tool, in BOTH 32 bit and 64 bit versions, but when I run them, they say "...not a win32 application".
Now I'm trying to install AVG again, and when I run the installer stub file "avg_free_stb_all_2012_1913_cnet.exe", I get the same message. "C:\...\avg_free_stb_all_2012_1913_cnet.exe is not a valid Win32 application." The PC's OS is WinVista, and it SAYS it's the 64 bit version under computer properties.
