I left out a lot about what I run into in this area. Your first post had me thinking about MSFT's backup failures and the second post about the USB error and this post makes me think about how many times I find an out of whack 7.
For example many builders install 7, and might put in the video driver but not go check the maker's web pages for motherboard chipset drivers or skip the Intel RST (it's name may have changed) because they don't use RAID yet it can matter.
These externals can get wonky so we know to only connect via a motherboard USB port (often at the rear of the desktop) and turn off the USB power saving to side step a bug.
This may be salvageable but again, MSFT backup is too unreliable for me.
