Probably not. Before the OS was reinstalled (and if you had anything other than Windows 7 before, your friend likely compounded your problems by giving you a pirated copy) there might have been some chance, but installing an OS made it that much more unlikely to get anything.

Of course if we knew what virus you had picked up, it might be easier for someone to tell whether it deletes files, encrypts them, or maybe just hides them from the OS. Unfortunately there are just too many key details missing to really be able to offer much of an answer. Did your friend clear out the virus before installing Windows 7, did he format the drive during the Windows installation, what virus was it you were hit with, etc. So without knowing any of those, the best answer that can be given is that your files are gone forever with no hope of recovery.
