When you installed Office

the application Outlook which is part of office may have taken over as the default mail handler. In some circumstances this can create confusion in the sending of mail but have little or no effect on receiving.
In windows live mail on the Tools menu choose Options and check at the bottom of the General Page that "This application is the default mail handler"
