Scene modes

I'm trying to figure out how scene mode is implemented/used. If the scene is set to general, or anything other than auto, does it stay on those settings regardless of source material? When does it / how does it switch if on Auto? When complete with a calibration, I would prefer it not changing to another mode that wasn't calibrated or isn't needed specifically. What is a good example of when Auto for a specific input would be preferred?
