Vista Taskbar icons are missing: Sound, Network and Battery

I have been running Vista Home Premium for about 14 months now on a Dell Inspiron 1501.
For the past three days, I have suddenly lost the Volume and Network icons on my Taskbar.
If I right-click on the Task Bar and select "Properties", and the "Notifications" tab, the two checkboxes that correspond to these icons are unchecked and disabled/grayed out. I cannot check them.
I need to be able to see these. I cannot adjust the sound level and I cannot see if my computer is connecting to a WiFi Network when I boot it up. (I can access these functions if I open the Control Panel and Connect To, but I should be able to view these icons on my taskbar.)
I have not installed or uninstalled any programs.
About a week ago, I was missing the Power icon along with these other two icons. But, now I can see that one.
