The electronics made today have a life of about 10 years if your lucky . this is even if you use the device or not. one of the reasons for this is the capacitors used today have a very short life. the higher the operating temp the shorter the life. the power suppy caps are usually the first to go. they run hotter. however just sitting there and not being used ,a chemical reaction is occuring inside that slowly breaks down the internal structure. this is in consumer electronics . these are designed to fail.
military/goverment electronics is however not made with this failure design.
