Puma, you are correct when you say that IE is embedded in the operating system. However, IEXPLORE.EXE does not run unless you open the browser. Yes, a lot of third-party applications use IE's components, but what about this is so problematic? Safari is the more vulnerable of the two; in fact, some people said it should have been installed on all three machines at the PWN to OWN contest to level the playing field (the Mac got hacked first, and it took much longer to break into 32-bit Vista; 64-bit is even stronger, but it was left out). Of course, I don't know how much difference that would have made in Linux; you have to use Wine to install Safari.
