Education is suffering the most!
I am a high school teacher, and I think the worst problem is the dramatic decline in students ability to concentrate for more than a few moments. I mean, it is REALLY, really bad. I use to really fight cell phones in the classroom. It was against school policy, and students were CONSTANTLY distracted. Even the GOOD students would sneak peaks to check messages.
This year, along with a handful of other test teachers, we started a "Tech in Use" program, where we would embrace the technology and put it to use. I teach computers and digital photography, so it was easy to find valid uses. But, it has been anything but easy.
Trying to get everybody's attention, and then keep it, is almost impossible. I have an extra mouse pad on top of the computer, and students are expected to place their cell phone face down when not in use in support of the class. The class policy is that they better be using it for class, or they can still have their phone taken away. I also gave instructions last week to start using Do Not Disturb. I will start next year off with stricter guidelines when they can pick the phone up. As well as to use DND as a requirement. I didn't star the this year allowing the cell phones, so next year, starting off with the policy will make for a better statement of policy up front.
Point is, competing for the students attention thanks to the cell phone is under attack.
Furthermore, I think the greatest risk of the cell phone is to the youth who are under attack with the constant need to check for messages. They are busier than ever, because in addition to all of their activities and home work, they now have "social" needs as they spend hours of time on their phone.
And the worst part, is the students computer skills coming into the class are WAY down. 4-5 years ago, at least students were getting on the home computers to IM and AOL, 2-3 years ago, it was MS and FB on the desktop. Now, it is all on the smart phone. And I have lots of kids whose parents have dropped the home internet connection, let the home computer stay dead rather get it repair, etc.
Mark my words...the WORST of the cell phone impact is yet to come.
