I Would Love a World Without Cell Phones
It's more the noise and annoyance of people everywhere you go either talking out loud on cell phones or engrossed with their heads down reading email, plinking away on some sort of keyboard or other cell phone application. We really don't even need to mention using a cell phone (talking, texting, reading) while driving, a deadly activity.
The use of cell phones or smart phones has cut everyone off from society and human interaction. Example: my wonderful daughter and her husband and I took their three adorable triplet girls, age four, to the park. I had traveled 650 miles to visit them. My daughter and her husband sat side by side on a bench and were totally engrossed in whatever on their individual cell phones or smart phones, not speaking to each other, not looking at the girls having fun, not interacting or paying attention to me or the girls. It was not intentional. They were not even aware of what they were doing.
This has just become a habit ingrained in people. My husband and I recently went out to dinner at a nice restaurant. No less than three other couples seated at tables near us were engrossed in their phones, none of them really young people. They were not looking at each other nor talking to each other. One woman didn't even raise her head and make eye contact with the server who was asking her about her order for dinner. She just answered and never looked up from the phone.
My sister and I took a short weekend "girls road trip" vacation last year. Two days. I drove. She sat with her head down reading her work emails and answering them. She is 59 years old, not some teenager. She was tied to work while on vacation. She could not enjoy the scenery nor chat with me.
This is a sad commentary on the evolution of technology in society.
I have a cell phone, basic, cheap, no camera, text messages blocked. I keep it with me for emergencies. It rarely rings. Sadly I don't know how long I can go without some sophisticated "mobile device" as everything is headed in that direction.
Oh yes, I can imagine a world without cell phones.
