Cell phones forum: Change cell companies - told number can't port

The phone number, area code and exchange is from the area we live in and want service for. We are told that Verizon while providing service here, does not provide service here??? So while many are using Verizon locally, somehow the local numbers are a problem. Called Verizon and AT&T without successful port from Verizon. any suggestions about breaking through this or another way around it? thanks

Try going to their internet site and searching for "LNP" (Local Number Portability for answers to your problem. Wish I could answer your question with any certainty, but the suggestion is a starting point. Normally you don't have to contact the company you are porting out of (At&t in your example). Hope this helps.

The website has no help and they have said it is some kind of FCC ruling. So we may have to take our number to a landline, get a bare bones account and permanently forward it to a new cell number. Lot of changes to go through but can't think of any other solutions at this point. Thanks for your feedback.

Once you have ported to GV, going to Verizon should be no problem.

Spoke to Verizon today and they checked our two numbers and said they cannot be ported. Local number portability at the corporate office said they cannot use our current numbers. Why do you think going to GV will change this? Hope it is so but can you tell me the possible reasoning. Thanks

...porting from ATT to GV, since GV isn't location based per se. It's basically a group of VoIP numbers, which are mobile. Once you get it to GV, the sky's the limit since you can use the GV number nearly anywhere. Porting back out to Verizon, etc. shouldn't be an issue. Read more here:
