We have a Tracfone in the car.

It works. That phone is always in the car, in the center box on it's charger. Car goes on and it charges and it's there for the usual reasons. That's cheap!

Buy a smartphone for its portability. You're not going to want to lug a tablet around all the time, and if you don't have a device with you, you can't use it. A smartphone can still be used to run apps, view videos, and browse the web -- the display just is not as large. There are many unplanned times when you want to check email or browse the web when you're mobile -- a smartphone that's always with you is great for these purposes.

Buy a tablet for its larger display. For around the house and office, the mobility over a desktop or laptop is liberating. Also, for planned trips away when you know you'll have have time to use it, a tablet works well. You're just not going to want to have to have it with 100% of the time like you would a smartphone.

I just bought an LG840g tracfone with triple minutes for life. It is a touch screen smart phone like the iphone. I buy a discounted $89 yearly card with 400 minutes that become 1200 min. It lasts me over a year since I don't call any more than you do.
