....would be an iPhone for the easiest for starters with the Android in second. Afraid that I have never used a WIndows phone so I can't offer advice about that OS.

For a smart phone one generally chooses between an iPhone, an Android phone, a Windows 8 (or the older Windows 7) phone or (maybe a Blackberry smartphone. All are fine.
Since you're already plannng to buy a Windows 8 phone, it seems you've already made your choice.
If you're not using one currently, you don't have any issues with differences between your current one and your new one.

But for most folk they use the apps. And they use the phone. But there's something about Microsoft's new phones that can upset folk. Its that thrown under the bus feeling. If you didn't hear or feel it, read this link.

Same for 7.5 and there is no reason you expect this to change with 8.0
