How do I cheaply replace a Verizon wireless phone?

My son dropped his cell phone and broke its screen. He is not eligible for an upgrade until March. I am finding it is impossible to replace this phone without spending a fortune. I called Verizon and, after 20+ minutes found out they have NO basic phones with a QWERTY keyboard for texting available pre-owned, which leaves me to buy a new phone for, like $300? Can anyone tell me where I might get a cheap basic phone (all it needs is a keyboard for texting) to replace this one that will work with Verizon as a replacement? Thanks

Ebay, Craigslist, etc. all have new/slightly used/typical used models for sale. I've had friends even go as far as activating another line to get a subsidized handset price. YMMV.

If you buy a device from ebay, craigslist, etc. to make sure it is branded as "Verizon" and not any other carrier. Verizon will not activate another carrier's handset for their network.
