FWIW, you do not need an Apple computer to use these Apple devices. As long as you have wifi you are good to go. These are capacitive touch screens, btw.
iPod=compact device with smaller screen, some of the same features/apps as iPad & iPhone.
iPad=clearly popular from the larger screen, combined with the higher resolution display. Hence, $$$. A lot of folks try to do some of the same things they might do on their laptops but instead on this more svelte device that looks more cutting edge.
Would you mind showing me where you read that something 'requires a face-time enabled mac...' etc.? Perhaps you read partially about what is involved with a face time video call using one of the aforementioned devices. My family uses facetime between several different iOS devices in several states.
