I NEED HELP Travelling to Europe all over for a year

Is it better to buy and unlocked phone here and get sim card there? DO I need a SIM in each country or is there an international option>?
Should I get phone there ?
What do the SIM cards enable you to do just phone or text data and messaging?
Not to literate in these matters but don't want to return with a huge bill.
I know disabling and using wireless when possible is an option but when it is not I need to have a phone accessible.

Don't use your existing mobile # while in Europe and get a prepaid SIM/Phone and mobile # if you don't already have an unlocked phone. I can't comment about which company to use while in Europe. Using your existing mobile # while there will cost you a small fortune.

It's a trade-off, you get coverage in most countries, but not much data is included.

Depending on how important it would be to have a single SIM/number that worked everywhere, you could also opt for prepaid in different countries which would be less expensive. If you didn't need to talk much this might make sense since it can be on the fly as you need it. Prepaidgsm.net is a useful site you can peruse for more specifics.
