Weird text issue on iPhone 4

Hi all, first post to cnet, and with a question I find particularly puzzling.

My friend has an iPhone 4, bought about two months ago so fairly new. In addition to the first problems I had trying to switch contacts over for her, she recently came to me today to show me that her text were all screwed up.
She had sent a text to her aunt, but the text did not appear in the conversation. Later, she received a text inquiring as to who the number belonged too. Also, the text from said unidentified number called her by name, which was startling to say the least.

Another odd thing is that this iPhone does not know its own number. While multiple texts have been sent tonight, it pops up with a message saying that a number is required to send a message.

I am completely lost, so any advice or information you may have would be greatly appreciated.

...if that doesn't solve the issue, backup your vital data and perform a factory reset.
