Why is HTC Struggling So Much?

Hi everyone I'm new to the boards and was pondering last week the predicament HTC has gotten itself into the past year and why they are failing despite having what I believe is a superior product range. I organized my thoughts in a recent blog post: http://keysnkeys.com/2012/08/03/htc-quietly-sinking-and-a-strategy-for-recovery/

In a nutshell, I feel HTC can't compete with Apple and Samsung with pure marketing muscle or feature for feature so they need to:

1)Find a particular niche and stick to it
2)Find smaller key Influencers as spokes people/marketing partners that support that niche
3)Be scrappy with marketing and don't be afraid to take direct aim at competitors
4)Revamp the brand and ditch "Quietly Brilliant"
5)Don't go down market

I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on what you believe HTC's biggest issues actually are and how they can improve their position

HTC makes about a gazillion models for other parties, so they aren't really 'struggling' per se.

I'm simply not seeing anything unique in your blog post either. It's like a cut and paste from a bad Facebook business discussion or something(!)

I appreciate the feedback. Just honest thoughts of mine I guess packaged in a poor way. Do you really feel that they aren't struggling that much though? They make devices for alot of parties, but their flagship products that are supposed to bring the lion share or revenue is tanking pretty hard and is only set to get worse in the 3rd quarter.

I definitely feel they are in worse shape than you think looking at the market landscape.

A friend said to me "Android is the new Windows" and at first I shrugged it off.

Now that I've had more than a few Android devices (at the office we are porting apps) I see it's sadly true.

I often advise folk to not part with a lot of cash for those phones. They are nice but why folk want another Windows is beyond me.

HTC is losing clients

I have a HTC Desire HD and for the last year HTC has said that this model would receive ICS this summer. Now they have cancelled it. HTC does not know what it is doing in terms of Customer Care: it appears that once they have your money...that's it! After two years of using HTC, we will be changing at least 5 phones at the end of the year (and advising friends & family to do likewise) and it looks like we will be going with Samsung.

I am not sure that it is entirely HTC's fault that ICS isn't available for you device. Typically, it's the cellular carrier that releases/makes available Android updates and less the responsibility of the phone manufacturer.

But with JellyBean now out you see folk clamoring for that now. If you take a few steps back you see the issue. But how to lay it out so everyday folk understand?
