I Need to Update My Verizon Flip Phone & the MIFI2200 3G

Hello-My contract for the 2 lines I have with Verizon has been up for renewal for about a year. I also came in right before they ended the New Every Two program. So this means I have a $30 rebate and a $50 rebate for the MIFI2200 3G line. I have never had a smartphone. I have been looking and researching, asking friends, and checking coverage for the last year. I get confused with what they can do, but so many of the ones I saw seemed kind of cheap. I am hard on things, so I would need a case but the basic phone would need to be well-made. I realize the iPhone 4S has the ability to be a Hot Spot, but I am not sure if this is the same "Hot Spot" I had with the MIFI2200 3G. When I first got that MIFI it was the greatest device to take on a road trip. Do the smartphones offer the same type of ability? Meaning would I be able to use my MacBook Pro on the road and get a WiFi internet connection off the phone? Is so, would this add a lot more to the price of the data plan? I used not very much with my other MIFI. Never went over the "unlimited" amount. My questions are, I have seen and like the iPhone 4S, the Lucid by LG, and as far as the Mobile Hot Spots at Verizon, I have not ben able to find any reviews on the Samsung& the MiF4510Li 4G (made by Novatel).
I am open to suggestions on smartphones for a first-time user. As my friends say; "well, duh, it is about time."
