Can I share WiFi on an unlocked phone?

If I buy an unlocked smartphone which is 4G enabled, and has 'WiFi' sharing, will the WiFi sharing to my laptop or Ipad work automatically, or do I have to get the carrier to enable it. This assumes I have a Web/data plan for the phone.

In other words, is the WiFi sharing device specific (to the phone) or is it an option that only the carrier can enable, even on an unlocked phone?

You have to have a feature added to your account that is at an additional charge. It doesn't matter if the phone is locked or unlocked.

This is actually incorrect. Depending on the handset, OS and carrier, the OP could possibly simply install an app that enables tethering without anything required by the carrier's CS. For example, with T-Mo, Android and an app I will not name, it's quite possible. Of course this may be a breach of the carrier agreement. Is it possible, yes. Legal? Not usually as you have sort of hinted wink.

....it was impossible. I only stated the official policy. It is definitely a breach of agreement to do so (as hinted) and it won't be discussed in any detail on this forum. Pepe7 is technically correct.
