CNETTV = Flash = No access from iPhone

As a long time CNET visitor/member and a new iPhone owner, I am astounded that CNET uses flash for their videos when this site is, ahem, so pro-Apple anything. I never gave it any thought until I recently bought an iPhone4s (my first personal smartphone - have had a company provided, locked down blackberry until now).

Does CNET have plans to convert CNETTV to HTML5 video?

Not sure if this post belongs here but wasn't sure where else to put it. Posted several reviews in the past but first time poster in these forums. I'd be interested to hear people's opinions.

PS: Also, I don't see a forum specific search function? What's up with that?

on the PS:, I see that the forums are available as filter criteria. Other sites aren't necessarily so smart as to have that filtering. Good work, CNET.

Have you gone to http://cnettv.com on your iPhone?

It uses HTML5 video and I'm watching a CNET TV video right now on my iPhone.

Give it a try. It works fine for me.

Yes, and when I go there on my iphone I get a message telling me to upgrade or install flash. I have also had flash crash on my on my Firefox browser on my PC, so it looks to me as though flash is used. Is there some setting on the iphone or is it there a different url for non-flash?

Sprint iPhone4s, iOS 5.1, not jailbroken. Didn't think that was even relevant to the discussion; I figured either cnettv uses flash or it doesn't. I guess in as far as my phone is concerned I guess it may not be identifying itself as an iphone to your site?

This all started from my clicking on a link to a video from the "Today on CNET" email from my iphone inbox. That takes me to cnettv.com, and does not redirect me to m.cnettv.com like I have seen other sites do. When I type the m.cnettv.com url in and go their directly, it does work, but that seems odd that I and everyone else that visits your site would have to do that from the iOS device.

Maybe there could be a problem with my phone not identifying itself correctly to your site such that it doesn't know to redirect me, but didn't figure there could be anything special about my iphone. The only thing I've done to it is upgrade to iOS 5.1 (which at this point seems like it was a mistake).

Try clearing your iPhone browser cache. When your on an iPhone/iPad CNET TV should be optimized for HTML5, not flash--flash is only used when you visit the site on a desktop.

Try hitting CNET TV directly via this URL: http://m.cnettv.com

Also the product manager of CNET mobile told me that if all goes to plan, later this week they will be launching a much improved CNET TV experience on mobile, so stay tune.

Let me know if it works.

I cleared my cache and that seems to have helped somewhat depending on what link I've clicked on to start when entering the site. But say I search for 'cnet tv' in google, then click on the cnettv.cnet.com link that comes up, it doesn't auto-redirect me to the mobile site. Not sure if that's how it should work or not.

I hope that was sarcasm Pepe, because you utterly miss the point. If you are click any sort of link to cnettv.com or search for anything and a link to cnettv comes up, you aren't going to retype the URL - especially on your phone.

If you are know a specific URL, it's always a good idea to use it instead of relying on google. Even sites like CNN that are mirrored heavily can sometimes throw back 404 or 403s when using a search engine.

We get a lot traffic from Google to CNET, and our site should detect if people are on mobile platform to give the visitor the better mobile experience--especially if it's CNET TV when flash isn't available on iOS. Most people won't have the direct mobile URL to CNET TV, so I would consider this bug found a bad user experience and should be addressed ASAP. Hopefully they get this fixed soon.
